Acupuncture for depression?

I’ve read quite a few news stories lately discussing depression, pregnancy, and the postpartum period. Most recently, a study published in the journal Pediatrics showed that babies exposed to antidepressants during the second or third trimester are more likely to show developmental delays with milestones like sitting up and walking. Researchers did say, however, that more follow up study is needed. Read the story here.

So what’s a pregnant mama struggling with depression to do if she can’t be on meds? A study from the Stanford University School of Medicine suggests acupuncture may provide some relief. According to the study, pregnant women struggling with depression experienced a greater relief of symptoms when treated with acupuncture specifically targeted to treat depression, compared with those receiving massage or acupuncture in points not known to treat depression. Read more about that study at the Time.com health blog. The New York Times blogged about it yesterday, too.

If you think you might be a candidate for acupuncture to treat depression (or other issues), try talking with Blooma’s Jalashree Pradhan. Her advanced training in gynecological/reproductive issues blend beautifully with her gentle and creative approach to help the body find health and harmony of mind, body, and spirit.

Better than Botox

Acupuncture Facelifts are a safe alternative to Botox, you get 10 treatments 2 times a week for 5 weeks and the results will last for 5 years with touch ups. This treatment is great, it tightens the muscles of the face and neck, tightens the skin, decreases wrinkles, and helps promote collagen production, which the body stops making at the age of 30. As a happy side effect it releaves headaches along with sinus problems.  If you or anyone you know is interrested in Botox I strongly urge you to try Acupuncture first, it’s all natural and the results we have been great!  913-825-3900  if you have any questions feel free to call.

Severe Raynaud's Case - Treatment Advice

I have an interesting case. I have a 58 y/o white female 250 5′5″ that presents with A typical Raynaud’s Syndrome. First only her right hand was affected causing two severe wound to develop on her index and middle fingers. Now her left hand and fingers are bluish and it loks like woounds developing on her left index and ring fingers. Any suggestions to help with her condition.

I have given her the following supplements:

Ginkgo B, Bilberry, Omega 3 and 6, Vitamin C

Can microcurrent be helpful and if so how should this be administered? Her Internist originally prescribed Z Pack which was of no benefit.  Her Chiropractor has given her cervical adjustments without success.

I sent her to a wound clinic where she has placed on Levaquin. She has just completed her third series dose of the antibiotic. Her ANA was Negative.

The wound clinic wants her to see a Rheumatologist to which she has an appt in March. Time is of the essences as I don’t want her to loose her fingers. Any suggestions?

Thank You

Dr C., Chicago, IL

My answer:

Hi Doc C.,

My treatment style is to try a series of techniques and note responses both through kinesiology and observed changes until I see what is working.  Here are the treatments I would consider with this patient, in order of priority:

1)  Polarized Microlight therapy – using + proximal, – distal along dermatomes and myotomes of affected upper extremities.  Use color therapy to stimulate circulation such as red or scarlet.

2)  Use Micro-Macro technique to connect affected hand areas to corresponding ear points and facial zones, again using polarized microcurrent and light.

3)  Use flooding therapy through pad electrodes.  I developed a protocol called Dermatome Interferential that uses four pads  – one set polarized, one biphasic for treating extremity disorders like this – much more effective than just local microcurrent stim.

4)  There is a correspondence between the Root Chakra and the hands and feet.  I would test her to see if she is chronically blocked at that center.  If so, use chakra opening and strengthening Microlight techniques with guided visualizations and affirmation to help her deal with the underlying issues keeping that center shut down.

I hope this helps!

Acupuncture Points & their Beautiful Names

There are many reasons acupuncturists use particular points in a treatment.

But what is an acupuncture point? Well, they are identified as hollows in the structure of the body and are areas that are particularly responsive to the flow of Qi. By manipulating the Qi at these points, the body is able to respond by balancing its yin and yang, resulting in harmony and good health.

The main reason an acupuncturist chooses a point is, of course, its function. Particular points are able to restore the balance of Qi, clear Heat, warm the body, clear the Mind and restore the Spirit .. the list goes on.

But one of the other things that can steer a practitioner towards a point is it’s name and there are some beautiful and poignant names that work so well. Take for example a point most people will know as Stomach 25. Its Pinyin name is Heavenly Pivot and its Chinese name Tian Shu. Tian means Heavenly and in Chinese Medicine signifies a “Spirit” point.

St25 is level with the umbilicus and is the most  distal of the Tian points. As it name may suggest it is the balance beteen Heaven and Earth, at the centre of the body. As the name suggests, it is the central place and can be used when a person needs to come back the their “centre”, to realise their true worth and keep them grounded.

I’ll be talking about point names and their functions on my Twitter feeds. So, please follow me to lean more. You can find me here at Mark_Ackland

Acupuncture and Back Pain

Okay, so I know it’s not the latest news, but it is worth reiterating just how good acupuncture is for back pain.

Back in 2009 (sorry, I just couldn’t resist the pun), the BBC reported how the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) said that patients with persistent low back pain should be offered acupuncture, massages or exercises on the NHS.

I treat many patients with back problems.

The British Occupational Health Research Foundation (BOHRF) states that 40% of the population are affected by back pain and 50 million working days are lost. The cost to the working public is  about £5 billion (or £200 for every employee) in sickness absence costs.

If you suffer from back pain and nothing, so far, has seemed to work, go to my About page and give me a call. Let’s see if acupuncture can help get you pain-free.

reviving this, hopefully

I completely forgot about this blog until I logged into WordPress using my Gmail account. The link that WordPress sent brought me here. I was about to open a new blog (call me a serial blog creator) when I realized I really liked WordPress.com.

This blog was basically a private blog, but what’s the point of a private blog anyway? Here I am back again, public.

The urge to write began yesterday. I was trying to write an abstract for my JD thesis, but couldn’t bring me to write. It’s been so long since I wrote anything that isn’t an exam answer or an email to my parents or a short status in Facebook. So my mental block brought me here.

A short segue to explain. I was in my weekly acupuncture session a few hours ago, and for some reason, my “blogging urge” was reinforced while I was talking to Dr. S., my acupuncture doctor over at Centro Maginhawa. He tends to inspire. I’ve been trying a lot of new things lately, and I realized I wanted to write about this acupuncture experience. In a few days time, I’ll be attending yoga classes at Pulse Yoga Greenhills. I’m really excited about it. This is the first time since I took Bikram Yoga classes that I’m deciding to take control of my life once again WHILE in law school.

So what’s been up lately? School and more school. I need to be interesting again, in a non-school way. I’m in my third year in law school, and I’m trying really hard to shed off my stiff-and-nervous-all-the-time outlook in school. I’m seeing that the rest of my blockmates have already finished doing that. My efforts are quite late in the day, but I must or else I will lose it.

I even attempted to stop going to school for a day. I tried convincing my husband that I must not go to school anymore, but of course, it was just an urge that also goes away.

So many plans for 2010. I’ve lost January already, but that’s not so bad. After my acupuncture today, I’m as happy as my doberman Frida dog. I’m glad it’s a weekend. Time to have my acupuncture, time to rest and sleep a good 8 hours.

Hello, reader. I’m Agatha.

Alternative medicine

Whether it’s acupuncture, homeopathy or a raw food diet, more veterinarians are expanding their approaches and more pet owners are shedding negative perceptions of

By Marnette Federis / The Bulletin

Published: January 25. 2010 4:00AM PST

Inside an examination room at the Holistic Clinic for Animals in Bend, veterinarian Susan Bertram gently strokes a thin black-and-white dog. Maggie, a McNab herding dog, stands rigid and anxious on top of the exam table while Bertram feels for a pulse underneath one hind leg. The exam is part of the physical check Maggie gets whenever she’s at the clinic.

But the 7-year-old animal is not there for a regular doctor’s exam; she’s there for acupuncture.

A few moments later, Bertram places a needle on top of Maggie’s head, a calming point, to help the dog relax, Bertram says. Later, she pushes more needles into different parts of Maggie’s body.

With an assistant’s arm around Maggie to keep her lying down, the dog starts to look more at ease. Bertram leaves the needles in for 15-20 minutes.

Maggie’s owner, Whitney Rhetts, said the acupuncture has done wonders for her dog, who suffers from chronic inflammatory bowel syndrome. But instead of conventional medicine, such as anti-inflammatory drugs, Rhetts opted for alternative pet care that includes a restricted diet, herbs and acupuncture every two weeks.

“It’s working,” Rhetts said. “We’ve been doing this over a year; she’s definitely improved.”

Rhetts is among the growing number of owners seeking alternative care for pets, local veterinarians say. These treatments might include acupuncture and homeopathy, which uses small doses of natural medicines and remedies.

In 2007, 38 percent of adults in the United States used some form of alternative medicine for themselves, according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. Local veterinarians say that once people start turning toward natural medicine, it’s not a far leap for them to try to find similar treatments for their animals.

“As a result of people’s personal experience toward more natural methods, they tend to choose natural healing modalities for their pets,” said Leslie Griffith, a veterinarian with Sage Veterinary Alternatives in Bend.

In Central Oregon, Bertram’s Holistic Clinic for Animals and Sage Veterinary Alternatives are two places owners may be referred to for alternative care.

The combination of traditional and alternative medicine in veterinary practices has gained more respect within the field, says Deborah Hodesson, another veterinarian in Bend. She has a more standard veterinary practice, but she’ll often refer clients to doctors knowledgeable about alternative treatments.

Navigating your late 20s, Part 2: clearing the slate

This article is part two of a three part series on Saturn return: the period of transition between the ages 27-30.  Click here to read part one, and learn more about what your Saturn return means.  In this article we will talk about the process of clearing away things that you’ve out-grown, or that are no longer good for you.  Since the Saturn return is a turning point, it is necessary to clear some of the old stuff away, before you can be ready for new things in your life.

If you are in your Saturn return, the process of clearing out old stuff has probably already been happening on it’s own.  The most obvious way it might be showing up in the feeling that things aren’t working anymore. Your standard methods for coping, and getting your needs met, seem to stop working for you.  Maybe its a job crisis, and you find yourself sick of working the same dead-end jobs you have been surviving on since your early 20s.  Maybe you find yourself in what is supposed to be a good career, but totally burnt-out and uninspired.  Maybe the techniques you have used to cope with the emotional scars of your childhood are finally catching up with you.  Maybe your relationships and friendships all seem to end in the same way.  Whatever the reason, life just doesn’t seem to work anymore.  You can keep trying the same old methods, and chances are you’ll keep getting the same results, or you can use this time to re-evaluate and take stock of your life.

Ask yourself what isn’t working.  You don’t have to know what you are going to do about it yet, you just need to know what isn’t working.  In fact, often not  knowing how to change something is what keeps us from being ready to let it go.  But here is the secret, you don’t have to know what is coming next in order to aknowlege you are ready to let something go.  It might be a good idea to get some good perspective on this part, either from a counselor or a trusted friend.  Often, others can help us identify what our repeated patterns are, and what we might need to get rid of.  We might be too close to the issue to be able to see it clearly.

Let go of your limits: What are the stories that you tell yourself about what is not possible?  What hopes and dreams do you carry that you tell yourself you just can’t have?  There are lots of reasons we tell ourselves that things can’t work: money, fear, or the fact that we’ve never seen it work before.  Chances are, that a lot of the limitations that you carry with you came from your childhood.  During this transition you have two choices: take these limiting ideas with you, or let them go.  I’m not saying it is easy, but think about it this way:  the universe is handing you a tremendous opportunity to reinvent yourself, what kind of person do you want to become: someone who is daring, courageous and able to live out their dreams, or someone who is scared and stuck by the limitations in their own minds?

Let go of old ideas you hold about yourself that aren’t true anymore.  We all have stories around about who we are.  Some of them were given to us by our family, some we invented ourselves.  Make a list of all the things you often tell other people about yourself.  It can include serious things or silly things.  Then go through the list and really examine the things that aren’t true about you anymore.  Write down a new list of things you are ready to let go of about yourself, and release it using one of the ideas listed below.  Keep a record of what you released to review later, (we will come back to this idea of self-concept in part 3 of this series.)

My tried and tested way of releasing old patterns is to set my intention, and use ritual.  A simple way to do this is to write down what you want to release, find some quite private space, and safely burn your list.  You can be creative, and make up your own ritual by releasing something into flowing water, burying it, or letting the wind take it away.  (Please remember to make sure anything you release into nature is biodegradable)  It sounds too simple, but intention setting can be a powerful way to send a strong message to your subconscious that you are ready to move on.  Before you do it, be sure that you are really ready to let something go.  I always recommend waiting a few days between writing the list and burning it.  Get some perspective on how this pattern/relationship has helped you in the past.  Its always easier to let something go with an feeling of gratitude rather than anger.  You adopted this way of being in the world to get you to where you are today.   Even though it doesn’t work for you anymore, there was still a time when it was helpful to you.  Letting things go with gratitude is a way of practicing self-acceptance and forgiveness, this makes the transition into something new much smoother and easier.

I’ll say it again, it is not easy, but you can do it. Start with what isn’t working, and get rid of it.  Dealing with issues from your past that are too much for you to handle alone?  You may need some help:

Counseling can be an excellent way to change emotional patterns that aren’t working anymore.  See the links section of this website for some great counselors in Portland.

Acupuncture: In Five Element acupuncture we have several treatments geared specifically towards releasing old patterns.  These are called Dragon Treatments.  They were used in the past to deal with what was once termed ‘possession’.  When we talk about it today it sounds mideval and antiquated, but think about if you’ve ever felt so affected by something that it seems to be ‘haunting’ you.  These are the types of situations that Dragon treatments can be most effective for.  You can be haunted by an event, a relationship, something from your childhood, or simply an emotion like anxeity that you can’t seem to get rid of.  Dragon treatments are a combination of 7 p0ints on either the back or the front of the body that help to clear the way so that you can begin moving-on from past events.  They are not miracle treatments, often when an event is that significant it takes time, thought, and real work to heal from it.  Dragon treatments can be the first step towards that healing, and I often think of them as getting the door open, so that we can clean out the rubbish.

Whatever your method, clearing the slate can be a great way to get you through your Saturn Return.  In part 3 we will talk about setting intentions to build the kind of life you want to see yourself living in the future.
